Birds in disagreement July 2, 2007

One fine morning my usual drill of getting ready for work was interrupted by an alarming amount of noise. More like many bunch of keys being shaken in a steel bowl. And the amount of emotion in the ‘voices’ only added to the drama. Making me rush to my balcony to find out what could be causing this uproar. And I find two groups of birds (of the same feather) in strong disagreement over something. They were really going for it. There were no obvious reasons in sight, like say food or younglings etc. Could this be to do with territorial disputes, or courtship or maybe world politics. I will never know…

Headless! July 1, 2007

There is this abandoned antenna facing my balcony. A reminiscent of the days of terrestrial TV signals. And it is quite a favourite with birds wanting to perch. This specimen would not stop rotating its head in a most amazing fashion, making it disappear once in a while. Just watching the performance gave me the creeps… imagine humans doing it … in coffee shops, bookshops, at the marriage ceremony etc !!

Alone but not lonely

A few days back, on a moist and light evening, I saw this bird flying back. Alone in the vast sky. And, I thought of the pilgrim traveller. Alone but not lonely.

The Mighty Ant June 27, 2007

Caught on extreme closeup, this big black ant (carpenter?) looks as ominous as it is. If you have never had one clinging to your skin, believe me, you have no idea what those jaws can do. I have a vivid childhood memory of pulling one stubborn specimen which had its jaws sunk into soft skin of an aged aunt. The ant came off, but the jaws stayed glued into the skin. Must have hurt both, aunt and ant  🙂

The ants go marching May 4, 2007

This morning my kitchen threw a surprise
For there was an army at work from before sunrise
From window to floor and floor to ceiling they went
Sharing my house without contributing house rent!

Over the jar, under the sheet
Around the tumbler they go with scurrying feet
One two one two go their steps
Paying no heed to any form of rest

Along the way they whisper in every ear
And pheromones tell them how far or near
Like living dots on some magical picture book
That tell a story whichever way you hook

Please take me along I felt like saying
For I too want to walk without ever tiring
I ask what gives you such strength
For you have no nation, religion or friend

What need for such reasons they ask perplexed
Specially when life is to a few months compressed
Food for winter we collect when it is May
That is our secret is all we can say

A lot we can learn from the tiny ant
Though they steal our food and make us rant
So the next time for inspiration you are searching
Remember to look at the ants go marching
