Of Menstruation and Menopause June 25, 2008

For more than 6 years now, ‘G’ (my house help) and I have been together. I believe we enjoy the working relationship that exists. I have found her to be particular about cleanliness and she meets the tough standards I set. Hopefully, I in turn have been a kind and loving employer. She goes out of her way to keep my house clean and I go out of my way to stand by her in whatever manner I can.

Recently she has been complaining of abdominal and chest pain. Some tests later, I found out that the problem is presence of Uterine Fibroids (Myomas). The doctors have advised a Hysterectomy.

I try and accompany ‘G’ to the doctor as often as I can. The consultations have flooded my vocabulary with terms associated with the female species. From the familiar Uterus and Ovaries to the distant Fallopian tubes and the not fully understood Menstruation and Menopause. And I am talking only of knowing what these organs and their major functions are. I dare not delve into my ignorance of subtle functions, side-effects, and the first hand knowledge a woman would have or atleast what a married man would have.

What Hysterectomy will you do: total or supracervical?
Should we consider Laparoscopic technique (increased expenses)?
What about Myomectomy?
Isn’t the Uterus of life long importance (wikipedia says so)?
Should we remove it (this should have been my first question)?

and some another few dozen questions I would like answered in ordinary language.

Now, all of this has overwhelmed me and I am somewhat embarrassed by my inability to hold a fuller discussion with the doctor. ‘G’s shyness is not helping either. Though the fact that she has taken the courage to end phone conversations with a nice ‘bye’ is promising.

Whoever said Ignorance is Bliss must have overlooked the peculiar plight of a single man, more familair with machines than females, having to assimilate complex subjects like Menstruation and Menopause.

Which is my favourite comic strip? My answer to that question depends on when you asked.

As a kid, Flash Gordon and Phantom were my favourites. Then for a very long time I cherished TinTin and Asterix&Obelix. During high school I was hooked to Beau Peep. In the recent few years, I have taken to Calvin&Hobbes and Dilbert. It is tough to choose between the two as my current favourite.

So, when my friend Puja took a test that will reveal your Calvin-Hobbes mix, I had to take one of my own. Not that the test is reputed or known to be accurate. But my score did surprise me. For I have always associated equally with Calvin and his pet tiger Hobbes. Sure, I adore Calvin and fully relate to his devious plans, wicked self, honesty and tribulation. Yet, I find the presence of Hobbes equally necessary and relevant.

Cows and Humans June 11, 2008

Sayajigunj, Vadodara, India. 2008

.

In India, there is peaceful coexistence of domestic animals and humans. It is inevitable given the almost animal like living conditions of so many Indians.

We are poor by choice. Poverty has become a state of mind. The little that the government does is frittered away by its own corrupt officials and bureaucracy.

And in the midst of all this, is the tragic apathy of city dwelling middle class and rich to the plight of the underprivileged who are easily labelled as lazy and thieves. It is almost impossible to think of God on a hungry stomach, how then can we expect the exploited to act responsible?

I urge you to play your role (small or big) in removing poverty and illiteracy from our land. How about shouldering the education of two poor kids?

Time dissolves everything – the unsurmountable walls of erstwhile forts, the mightiest mountain peak, and your successes, failures & memories. In the end, only time remains. In the begining, there was only time.

Are you a windmill type? May 14, 2008

The windmill blades go whoosh whoosh whoosh. You must stand below one to experience the size and volume.

I was wondering how amazing windmills are. They simply stand in the path of wind and ‘receive’ what they need. They do not chase the wind, they do not trap the wind and they do not alter the wind.

Are you a windmill person? Or do you leave your ecological footprint wherever you go?
