Birds in disagreement July 2, 2007

One fine morning my usual drill of getting ready for work was interrupted by an alarming amount of noise. More like many bunch of keys being shaken in a steel bowl. And the amount of emotion in the ‘voices’ only added to the drama. Making me rush to my balcony to find out what could be causing this uproar. And I find two groups of birds (of the same feather) in strong disagreement over something. They were really going for it. There were no obvious reasons in sight, like say food or younglings etc. Could this be to do with territorial disputes, or courtship or maybe world politics. I will never know…

On a rainy day

On a rainy day (Jamshedpur, India, June, 2007)

.

The mighty arrogant skyOn a rainy day (Jamshedpur, India, June, 2007)On a rainy day (Jamshedpur, India, June, 2007)
huffed and puffed with cotton ball clouds
Streaks of sunlight breaking through, naughty and buoyant
The song of birds from far and near
Angry and bewildered at why it rains so generously
Why it rains pitter patter pitter patter?
The mud is stirred and its soul awakened
Blossom bright and lively greens
The whispering wind carrying secrets from far
And the leaves sway is agreement to those unheard tales
I smile one more time and add a wrinkle somewhere.
.
Crashing down it came for hours
Followed by an eerie silence
“How can it stop raining so suddenly” I ask?
Blue and Red balloons run out of their homes
Shouting with glee, splashing water and joy all around
A vehicle passes and the drums roll
The show is back after the break
The humid air is heavy with memories
Someone is cooking aromatic rice
I think of my mother and wonder who has not seen God?
I pull-on my shoes and walk out
Its time to get wet even though it isn’t raining anymore.
.
As I walk and get wet
I happen to pass grass patches
The blades gloriously declaring their existence
Which until now was redoubtable
Isn’t it funny how the rain transforms?
Grass become proud and Men become weak
Rocks melt away as Sands hold true
Truly, water gives life something to live by
Lost in this explosion of HIS self
I find a new meaning
To who I am and what I seek
And, as I shrug off centuries of dust
I prepare to hug the Earth.

Headless! July 1, 2007

There is this abandoned antenna facing my balcony. A reminiscent of the days of terrestrial TV signals. And it is quite a favourite with birds wanting to perch. This specimen would not stop rotating its head in a most amazing fashion, making it disappear once in a while. Just watching the performance gave me the creeps… imagine humans doing it … in coffee shops, bookshops, at the marriage ceremony etc !!

Alone but not lonely

A few days back, on a moist and light evening, I saw this bird flying back. Alone in the vast sky. And, I thought of the pilgrim traveller. Alone but not lonely.

Upholding your laundry June 28, 2007

Thank God I am not a cloth clip. Imagine being stuck with the same cloth line, hanging upside-down most of your life, weathering the sun and rain and not a word of gratitude from the people whose laundry you are upholding. Maybe I should go say “thanks!” to these bright things ….
